| Where should you back up? |
|
Once you have determined which files to back up regularly, you must decide where to store this data. There are different types of programs for doing backups, and many programs within each type, each with their own procedures. If you do not need to backup on a very frequent basis, you probably don't need any special backup software, and can instead use your file manager (Windows Explorer, Mac Finder) to copy files to a removable media. If you have installed Windows XP on your computer, you can use Windows XP Backup program to save copies of disk files that protect you against data loss. There are many secondary media that you can store your backups on including CD, DVD, flash memory, another hard drive, or even online. The fastest, easiest option for backing up a hard drive is to use an external hard drive. These data storage devices are relatively cheap for the benefit that they provide. You should keep your backup away from your computer and someplace safe, so a natural disaster or theft will not strike both your computer and your backup.
