| Compact Flash (CF) |
A flash memory format has been introduced in 1994 by SanDisk Corporation. Based on ATA PC Card (PCMCIA) specifications but measured smaller, Compact Flash is available with storage capacities ranging up to 16 GB. Compact Flash cards are larger than other flash formats, but have become very popular for storage in personal digital assistants (PDAs) and digital cameras operating as a hard disk. There are two different types of Compact Flash cards corresponding to different thickness (to accommodate different capacities):
Type I Compact Flash cards are 3.3 mm thick
Type II Compact Flash cards are the second-generation format, which increases the thickness from 3.3 to 5mm.
In 2004, Pretec Electronics Corporation introduced a 12GB Compact Flash memory card.
Compact Flash cards are available with storage capacities ranging from 256MB up to 16GB and larger.
Manufactured by SanDisk, Lexar, Dane-Elec, ATP, Samsung, Qmemory, Canon, Microtech, Kingston, Transcend, and Toshiba.
