| SmartMedia Cards |
An ultra-compact flash memory format developed by Toshiba and Samsung was introduced in 1995. It is similar to Compact Flash memory size, but as thin as a credit card. Capacities never reached beyond 128MB. SmartMedia cards require no assembly in manufacture, as they are actually flash memory chips in a unique chip package. Unlike CompactFlash, SmartMedia doesn't have an on-board controller. The cards can be plugged into a SmartMedia socket or into a standard Type II PC Card slot with a PC Card adapter.
SmartMedia cards are available with storage capacities ranging from 32MB up to 128MB.
Manufactured by SanDisk, Lexar, Dane-Elec, Oympus, Microtech, Samsung, Kingston, and Transcend.
