How to restore pst-files.

Most of our clients get their recovered data back being burned on DVD or CD. Among these data, there are often Microsoft Outlook files on the media.

When clients try to import .pst files from CD/DVD to Outlook folders they sometimes get a message saying that "File access is denied. You do not have permission to access the file."

The same problem also occurs if one tries to open a .pst file from a CD/DVD. Why does it happen? In fact, when burning a file to a CD/DVD, the file is created by default with a read-only attribute. There is no way to change this on a CD/DVD. When using Windows Explorer to restore the files from the CD/DVD to the hard disk, the read-only attribute remains set for the files. Therefore, you are not able to modify the files unless you remove the read-only attribute. To resolve this issue, you can manually clear the read-only attribute from the restored files. Here is how.

Instructions for clearing the Read-Only attribute from a file:

1. Copy the .pst file from CD/DVD to a hard disk or to another type of media.
2. In Windows Explorer right-click the file that you want to change, and then click Properties.
3. On the General tab, click to clear the Read-Only check box.
4. Click OK.

The Import process should now finish successfully.
